Getting the Most out of Riding Different Skis
Today’s slalom skiers come in all shapes, sizes, styles and skill levels. No matter our differences we all want one thing----more buoys!
One of the most critical elements in our quest for more buoys is a ski that will work for our style. Today’s slalom skis come in all shapes and sizes aimed at bringing out our highest level of performance. While it is great there are so many excellent ski options, it is up to each of us to sort out which ski will work best for our style.
Think back to when you bought the ski you are on today. How long ago was that? What was your skill level then? How does it compare to where you are today? Come to think of it, how did you select the model of ski you are on today? More often than not, it was probably some random opportunity. Like trying a friend’s new ski for a few passes last summer on a day when things were really clicking. Picking the right equipment is part of the endless balance of trying to select a ski that is best for your current skill level while still being advanced enough for you as your skills are improved.
Access to Compare
Probably the greatest obstacle a typical skier faces is gaining access to compare different skis at one time. One of the most successful initiatives D3 has developed in recent years is the Demo Team Program. With representatives of D3 located throughout the U.S. the opportunity for ski club members to come together and demo several different skis in one setting has been an enormous success.
The Demo Team Program is comprised of D3 ski experts that will come to your lake with sufficient ski inventories and product knowledge to guide a skier through different models and size D3 skis.
Getting the most out of a demo requires individual preparation to maximize your experience.
Ask yourself the following questions as you test each ski:
Demo days bring skiers together in a familiar environment with a shared objective of testing new products. Think about it: to have a D3 expert, accompanied by an inventory of skis, willing to come to your lake and work with you and your club members on the best ski for your weight/height, skill level, etc. is an opportunity you just cannot pass up!
Regardless of the time of year, any time is a good time to arrange a demo day at ski site.

Getting the most out of a demo requires individual preparation to maximize your experience.
- Have a realistic understanding of your present skill level going in. This will help you establish a realistic set of demo objectives.
- Be prepared to share where you feel your present skill set breaks down. For example; carrying too much speed into the turns or failing to attain and hold angle through the wakes, etc.
- Have a realistic set of objectives in mind. It would be great to get on to a new ski and get more buoys instantly----but that may not always happen. It may take a few sets to figure out what you like/dislike about the new ski. In many instances a ski may need a fin adjustment, wing adjustment or binding placement change.
Ask yourself the following questions as you test each ski:
- How is my overall course management?
- How well was I able to establish and hold angle?
- Was I able to hold edge directly behind the boat?
- How similar (or different) were my on and off sides?
- Did any of my present skill or style elements allow me to perform the pass more efficiently?
- Did I feel “maxed out” or did the setup give me a sense of margin for greater intensity?
